Who are the Critical Stakeholders for Planning? School Security Plan Q&A, #7

This is part 7 of a Q&A of school administrators regarding their thoughts on school security plans.  For more information on the three participants, Rebecca Jurs, Greg Rabenhorst, and Scott Mackall, see part 1 of this series here.

Q7: In your opinion, who are the critical stakeholders that need to have a voice in emergency protocol planning?

RJ: We have parents on our emergency preparedness committee. Some of these parents also happen to be law enforcement and fire personnel. And that is by design because they have that parent perspective but they also have that first responder perspective.  

Sometimes when you're planning for emergency, you need those perspectives versus the emotional one. But we also have educators, students, and dispatch on committees and we invite them to attend our drills. Other examples of individuals to include are your local hospitals, your local Red Cross, different community churches or local colleges. We bring them on board because many times we'll ask them if their site could be an evacuation site. We have a reciprocal agreement with them as well.
Also, don’t forget the students. We do, at certain points, ask for student feedback, specifically after we run drills.

SM: Critical stakeholders in the school environment are administration (the liable party), teachers, support staff and parents. All above groups must work with law enforcement and emergency response personnel like the fire department.

GR: District level personnel, school administration, teachers, school based mental health providers, and cooperative partners including mental health agencies, police, fire and EMS. Finally, students should play an active role in emergency prevention and planning.
